Errol Alvin Newman, beloved husband of Dorothy Newman (nee Nile), of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, October 27, 2025, at the age of 86 years.
Errol (“Jacksie”) was born in Craighead, Jamaica, on October 1, 1939. He was the youngest of fifteen surviving children of Robert and Ivy Newman. He immigrated to Canada in 1956 at the age of sixteen and lived with several of his brothers in Calgary over the years. Jacksie loved to recall the weekly Friday parties where the Newmans enjoyed listening and dancing to Calypso music played on a borrowed record player.
He was employed in the oil patch by the company PetroFina (later Petro-Canada), and it was while stationed in Wetaskiwin, AB, that he met Dorothy. They married in 1966 and welcomed three children while living in Wetaskiwin. In 1974, Errol moved the family back to Calgary, settling in Varsity, where they put down roots and made lifelong friends.
Errol loved being a Canadian and embraced all the sports that came with his adopted home. As a young man, he excelled—along with his brothers—at the game of cricket, played down at Riley Park. He took to hockey and football like nobody else, and loved watching the games, whether live or on TV. He also volunteered with his kids’ sports teams, either as a coach or by driving to and from practices and games—often with a post-game trip to Dairy Queen involved.
He ended his oil patch career having worked all over the world, setting foot on every continent except Antarctica. Dorothy joined him on several work stints, and their favourite vacation spot was Australia. Errol retired after more than 30 years in the oil and gas industry, where he made many treasured friends. He loved being a Grampa, and family get-togethers, whether for special meals or making patties, were always highlights for him. His sense of humour was endless, and his laugh was both unique and infectious.
Besides his loving wife, Errol is survived by his children, Kevan (Liesl), Stacey (Rob), and Collin (Jennifer); and his grandchildren, Hayley (Eamon), Nathan (Alannah), Shelby, and Zachary (Ashley). He is also survived by numerous Newmans across Canada and the United States.
Errol was predeceased by all of his siblings and by his grandson, Jax.
